Atsugi city has exceptionally decided to report its amendments
to the Australian Embassy on the 23rd. The Australian Embassy
inquired about the city's road development plan nearby little
terns' nests. Atsugi city responded that 'environmental experts
have reported that there is no negative impact of the development
over the nesting area'. High officials of the city will visit
the Embassy to apologise on this matter.
This issue started when the Embassy asked questions on potential
influences of the development over the nesting areas in May.
The city then referred it to experts.
The experts pointed out that it is necessary to examine measures
because there is possibility that an increased number of transport
and people upon the completion of the road could have negative
impacts on environment, while saying that the construction itself
would not have any influence. However, the city responded to
the Embassy 'we have received opinions that there will be no
negative impacts'.
In the wake of news reporting on this issue, the city has
decided to clear the air in regards to the report to the Embassy
as 'providing insufficient explanation' as well as promising
to submit a new report in which amended comments from experts
are included.
According to the City, it is now clearly mentioned that the
habitat of Little Terns could be endangered due to traffic of
people upon the completion of the road construction. They will
also make sure that the reason for stating 'no negative impact'
was only in reference to the construction itself.
"We would like to maintain the relationship with the
Embassy where we can mutually talk about matters clearly and
accurately. We would like to acknowledge and apologize for the
fact that the previous report did not state things clearly and
sufficiently," said the city public affairs department.
