A Special Lesson
Little Terns & Australia

My proposal was realized: The Minister of the Australian Embassy in Tokyo presented a very special lecture at an Atsugi primary school on Little Terns and their migratory behaviour between Australia and Japan.

Little Terns hatch their eggs in Japan and fly southwards for Australia.
In recent years however, development in the area has caused a critical drop in colony numbers. With Japan's largest surviving Tern colony located in Atsugi, Kanagawa, I proposed that this critical situation be used to lift environmental
awareness, especially amongst school students. After consulting Mr. Trevor Wilson, Minister (deputy head of mission) at the Australian embassy in Tokyo, and receiving his generous offer to participate, I approached schools close to the Little Tern colony. Toda Primary School agreed to host a special lecture titled "The Little Tern and Australia."
In retrospect, I am confident that the lecture served to heighten students' awareness of not only environmental issues, but enhanced their desire to study the English language study and learn more about foreigncultures as well.
